In this 2 hour working session, registered attendees will have an opportunity to identify what they’d like to learn about as it pertains to the size and scope of Canadian digital media economy, how to spread the word about our research study and what mechanisms can be employed for delivering the final report.

What to expect

The purpose of this working session is to lay the groundwork for our next research study. Among the questions we’ll be looking to answer are:

What would you like to learn about the Canadian digital media industry, from a service provider/workforce perspective?

How can we spread the word about the research study to attract a statistically relevant number of survey responses?

How can we build localized team of industry enthusiasts to help steer this research study?

Outside of government programs, how can we raise funds to support this research study? What does that look like?

What does the final report look like? What mechanisms can be used to spread the deliverables?

Outcome

The outcome of this working session is twofold:

Develop a baseline series of questions to help us better understand the size and scope of the Canadian digital media industry.

Create a localized working group of industry professionals, the goal of which is to help us steer the survey of our survey, promote it locally and connect us with industry/government stakeholders.

Nearly a year has passed since we released our 2011 report on the Canadian digital media economy. Many lessons were learned during this process, lessons that we’ve had an opportunity to reflect on these past few months.

It is with great pride that we announce our intent to conduct a second round of research where, like our previous study, we look at the composition of the Canadian digital media industry from a top down and bottom up perspective.

As a first step in this process, we’d like to establish a working group of localized industry professionals from each province and territory in Canada. Realizing that different areas of our country presents unique business challenges and a unique workforce composition, this Canada-wide working group will help shape the course of our research study, inform the nature of our research and help drive a statistically relevant and accurate snapshot of the Canadian digital media industry through localized advocacy, support networks and word of mouth.

We’d like to work with:

Agency partners and owners (employing anywhere between 5-5000 employees)

Digital media practitioners and freelancers (web, mobile, marketing, etc)

Industry stakeholders (agency owners, industry associations, etc)

Government stakeholders (municipal, provincial, and federal)

Digital creative talent recruiters

Technology industry enthusiasts and event organizers

Getting involved is easy. Tell us about who you are, your gifts, and how you’d like to help shape our research study, and we’ll get in touch with you when we’re ready to host our first working session.

Help us spread the word

We need your help spreading the word about our call to action. Please share this post with your networks by clicking the social sharing buttons below. In return for your help, we’ll send you the final copy of our 2012-2013 report on the Canadian digital media industry ahead of its public release:

From a social media perspective, there’s no denying the Kony 2012 campaign has been wildly successful. I can’t count how many times I saw a link to their campaign video in my Twitter stream or in my Facebook feed.

But is that all there is to it? Can simply tweeting, Facebooking, or sharing a video online help catch a mass murderer? Has social media made us prone to sharing information about a cause without actually considering the consequences?

One of the greatest aspects of a far-reaching communications channel like Twitter or Facebook is the ability to share information with a global audience. Long gone are the days when having geographically-dispersed conversations were expensive, difficult to tap into and even more difficult to start. Technology has changed the way we find and engage in those conversations, and has lowered the cost of entry into starting those conversations.

Campaigns like Kony 2012 highlight a larger problem: Mass audience of a message, the ease of sharing, and a limited understanding of the problem. Invisible Children, the charity behind the campaign, has come forth with a simple ask: Watch a 30 minute video about Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army, and share it with with your network. This video outlines the crimes he has allegedly committed, and asks you to buy a kit containing a few posters, buttons, and what appears to be a bracelet. It is hoped that the purchaser uses the items in the kit to “Make Kony Famous” by putting these posters up in their neighbourhood.

The definition of activism is “a doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue“. Postering one’s neighbourhood can be viewed as activism, but is only the beginning. Activism is persistent and usually requires numerous actions to be taken in order for the end goal to be met.

The term “clicktivism” has been used to describe activists using social media to organize protests. This form of activism has been used by organizations like Invisible Children to measure the effectiveness of their campaigns, usually through the number of messages shared, petitions signed or videos viewed. But can the passive viewing of a 30 minute video be defined as activism, if no action is taken? Does sharing a video make one an activist? The Kony 2012 campaign has certainly raised a contentious debate about the effectiveness of social media as a tool for activism, and has shed a light on the less-than-desirable financial history of Invisible Children.

What do you think? Is “clicktivism” the new activism? Can a status update be the catalyst for global change?

For the last few weeks, I’ve noticed an increase in the number of blog posts being written about the importance of blogging as a means of improving influence, among other things. I’m not saying this is an entirely revolutionary insight, but I’ve noticed this is the kind of content that seems to be making a more frequent appearance in my RSS feeds as of late.

While my interest in blogging is related to becoming a better writer, it also stems from a conversation I had on Twitter yesterday evening with Zach Bussey and Tyler Orchard. The gist of our conversation was the danger of cheering on mediocrity, the fear of providing honest feedback, and how to change the systemic problem of how we label those who offer feedback that may not be of the warm and fuzzy variety.

What does all of this have to do with blogging and becoming a better writer? Quite a bit, actually.

I feel that there are so many great stories out there that deserve more attention than they currently get. Unfortunately, these stories are often drowned out by the larger voices in the room, leaving lesser-known entrepreneurs struggling to find a shred of publicity that will hopefully land them an investor, a few (thousand) new users, or even a paying customer or two.

You may have noticed recently that our blog has been quiet as of late. Obviously, we’d like to change that. To help turn the tide in our favour, we’re looking for stories and interviews for the Pixel to Product blog, and we’d like to feature you, your company or your event on our site.

Among some of the types of stories we’re actively searching for right now are:

Startup launches or big announcements. Stories about new product releases, rounds of funding raised, or acquisitions are the types of stories we’re interested in writing.

Agency news. Articles about a client’s advertising campaign, openings within your agency or new business your company has acquired would be a few examples of the kinds of articles that are of interest to us.

Event profiles. If you’re on the organizing committee of a Canadian marketing/technology event you’d like to promote to a targeted and influential audience, tell us about it. We’re always on the lookout for industry events to promote to our readers.

Industry professional interviews. As our blog is heavily focused on the digital media sector, we’re interested in interviewing industry professionals in the digital marketing space. If digital marketing, advertising or social media are you areas of expertise, we’d like to talk to you.

If you have a story to tell, let’s talk about it. Send me an email with your story, and let’s start spreading the word about what you’re working on.
